    I got me a RED iguana.... :)
I have never seen one in the flesh before and he was $109.00 but I couldnt stop to bother with something so trivial as my budget. LOL

He came in from Fluker's Farms...all I can find online for them is feeders, tho. Anyone got an opinion on them?

    Anyways, YAY ME! :)

I personally have never heard of them and wouldn't know much about them. However, I would love to do some research on them and maybe have one as a pet, some day if the wife ever lets me. On the other side of the coin, I am not a great fan of Flukers and really don't trust thier products that much. I have read a lot of bad press about them and tried there products once an was very displeased with the results. There is one artile inparticular that you might like to read: http://www.reptilerooms.com/Sections+index...e-artid-45.html.
Please don't take this the wrong way, I am in no way stating you are a bad reptile parent or don't know what you are doing and have done any research. Its just my personal opinion against the company and that I don't trust them. I am sure that he will be a great pet and have a wonderful life with a loving and caring mom. I personaly would be very cautious and take him to the doctor soon after he was home and relaxed. Would love to see any pictures of the little guy.

Well, the reason I was Q-ing on Flukers farms is cause he came in from them to our local petco and he had a small bit of mouthrot (stomachtitis) that hes being treated for, and I was wondering wtf about that.
hes the most amazing brick red color, not the typical pumpkin-orange of the mature male green iguana.
I wonder what the genetics are involved here......? I have searched the whole net....no useful info there...!

"red" iguanas dont exist what you have is a green iguana but a green ig with a rare genetic trait...you cant bread red iguanas they just happen

i saw one at petco for 100 bucks but the habitat they had it in made me sick...no basking light, tempts in the 70s and food bigger than the poor things head

    Ummmmm Endvision...
they DO exist. I realize that it is a genetic twist on green iguanas and they are both the species Iguana-iguana.
I have about twenty years experience with herps, Iguanas in particular...and I have been trying to find a True Red Phase Iguana for quite some time. They are quite rare.
Im not talking about green iguanas that hatch green and turn a pumpkin-orange color...I am talking about igs that are born brick-red and stay that way, getting redder if anything else.
YES you CAN breed red igs and produce red igs...and only red igs. I have seen it.
It has something to do with genetics; one of the genes was recessed to create this, from what a red ig breeder told me.
So I did my research, and I know what I am talking about.
What I CANT find is someone who can explain to me the genetics involved.

    Thekingandmort,
I will be posting pics of him as soon as I find what my kids did with the digi-cam LOL
and Yeah, I have heard lots of negative reports about Flukers, Ig has been taken to the vet, and hes Oky-doky except for the mouthrot which we arent even sure is mouthrot...possibly from rubbing his snout on his previous enclosure. Either way, Im treating him with the silver sulfide meds twice a day. He is fiesty, strong, and healthy. I am also going to assume he's male, due to all the dewlap fanning and head bobbing. He also wags his tail like a dog LOL.

    SpiderQueen,

Glad to hear that the little guy is doing good and has a wounderful home. Since the last post I haven been doing some research on Red Iguanas and all I can come up with is basically the same information you have, I can't seem to find anything about how the genetics come in to play. I have to take our little guy to the vet in a week or so to have his toes looked at again. I will ask our vet if she knows of any good research or were to start. I will let you know if I find anything.

Thanks thekingandmort! I really appreciate that. What is wrong with your Ig's toes???

    mohik4n,
I know that Igs' colors can gradually change a bit due to thier diet, lighting, and state of health. It is not unusual for a totally healthy Ig. The pumpkin orange coloration implies to me that you have a male. When male Igs go into a rut they tend to turn more orangy, then fade back into the bluish-greenish coloring.
    No worries

Well, thats a new one on me... all the Igs I have dealt with that turned orangey were actually male.
    Was she born green?
    Do you breed her?

SpiderQueen, sorry about the delay, it's been a mad house around here lately. When we first got our Iggy Spaz he was a rescue from a pet store that was going inder and being investigated. He lived in a cramped cage with poor conditions and eight other Iggys. Needless to say he had some hair-line fractures and the on srt of MBD that all went uncarde for by the pet store. We took him to the vet after we first got him and she said that he was doing better and his toes would heal, but they would never be normal. So he is going back to get his one year check-up just to make sure his toes are still okay.

    SpiderQueen,
Hope things have calmed down a bit for you. Well Spaz's markings are kind of funny. the upper body is really nice bright shade of green, there are some narrow brown bands on the side (like vertical strips, which change in length and width with each shed) and a small narrow band of white down the tummy. We are not quite sure yet if Spaz is a he or a she, we can't really tell by the pores and the vent area is kind of hard to judge. I believe Spaz to be a male because of the two lumps by the vent, however sometimes it looks like there is one solid lump instead of two. We planed on having the vet use probes to determine Spaz's sex when we first went to the vet. But, do to his condition she said it wouldn't be a good idea at the time. I still haven't found any new info for you, but I will let you know when I do.
