Hello all, I have a couple spare 55 gallon tanks that im going to be turning into anole habitats. i have a few questions.... here we go: 1.) Can i make it so if my anoles lay eggs that they will hatch WITHOUT having to be taken out of the vivarium and put in an incubator? 2.) How manny males in a 55 gallon tank? still just one? or would 2 be pushing it with about 12 females (moreless females...undecided as of yet!) 3.) Any ideas on mixxing up long tailed lizards (male + 3 females) in with the anoles...ive tested them before together and had no problems but never tried breeding them in the same tank... 4.) The enclosure would have 2 waterfalls (one on either side) vines runing all over the tank, the back of the enclusure would have 4 exo-terra large vines, and 3 exo terra medium vines, the side walls would have 1 large vines per side (basicly plants EVERYWHERE) im considering putting 2 live ficus trees (i think thats the name of the tree...a tree commonly sold to be used in chamelion habitats) in the tank aswell, undecided as of yet... i mist daily for 30 seconds at a time 2 times daily to get the humidity spikes requierd for a healthy happy anole... x2 MVB one on either side over the waterfalls/tree's basking spots max out at 95 center of tank tends to stay at 70-78. (actual question, does this set up i just described sound good????) 5.) Would an undertank heater hooked up to a retrostat work for incubating the eggs to maintain a set temp 247 without removing them from the cage? or would the constant temps lower my chances of having the eggs hatch? 6.) how many females could i have in the tank with 1 (or 2) males? Food isnt a concern i get 1,000 crickets a month and i can up my order...and i have pinhead crickets on head for my baby tarantulas so i dont have to worry about feeding the babies...i even have a HUGE (40 pound) mealworm collony that is filled tot he brim with mealworms of every size. sorry for rambling on so long...if anyone actualy manages to get through this enormously long post i'd love a reply p.s. forgot to mention, the back and sides have backgrounds on them, the top is a screen lid made to fit tightly so i have no escapees even with the wires comming out for the waterfalls, with the 3 sides coverd the anoles feel alot more secure and it promotes breeding!
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it ok here goes: my two cents 1: i would strongly recommend that if you want SUCCESFUL hatchlings, to use an incubator for anole hatchling eggs. there are many reasons for this. personally, i think that it would be more of a risk leaving them in there.. if you think of how small anoles are in the first place.. think how small their eggs are going to be.. and how fragile.. i.e they could be damaged by all the moving lizards. Secondly, i think it would be better having the eggs at their own correct temperature in a seperate tank (incubator). you dont even have to spend loads on an incubator their are many info sheets online on how to make them outta pretty much nothing (apart from the heatmat etc) another thing which could go wrong is that the anoles COULD see the baby lizards as prey. they will be extremely small when hatched, and whilst i am not 100% sure of this, i believe they would make a nice meal for your adult anoles! 2: some people may argue with me on this, but i still say only one male in a tank even that big. male are very territorial, and will fight over food and even females. i also believe that the reccomemnded housing size for one anole is about 10GAL? therefore i think you may be pushing it with somewhat 12 females, plus a male. i know they are only small lizards, and this is only my advice, but if i were you id go with 6. (8MAX - although i would consider even this number too many) i do however, like to give my reptiles as much space as i can, and i have my two anoles in a 20GAL long, and they love it in there.. they are VERY active! 3: ive also heard of this (and seen it at my lps!) however, I WOULD NOT recommend mixing species. they may seem to get along fine, but if i were you i just wouldnt risk it. id prefer to give each of my reptiles as close to each of their individual enviroments as i possibly can. i just do not believe in mixing species, however similiar they are. although someone else may have some scientific info or something for you i just wouldnt do it myself 4: that tank as a whole sounds great! its gonna be a great display! 95F does seem a little high for the basking temps, id prefer to with about 88-90 ideally, this is what i have read from several caresheet and it seems to have kept my anoles pretty happy and healthy. 5: i dont know much about the hatching of eggs sorry, but i am sure there is either someone else on this site to help you with that or i will try and find you a site telling you about it. like i said earlier thought, if i was you, i would really plan on taking out the eggs from the cage and placing them into an incubator. 6: for your last question, i would personally say max 10, but dont count me on this.. anyone feel free to correct me at any point! another quick question.. do you plan on breeding your anoles to sell off the offspring? if so, i wouldnt say it was a very good idea. i had a friend who tried to do this once, but the pet store just laughed at him. they are very cheap lizards and can be bought in bulk at VERY cheap prices! although im sure there will be a few people who would LOVE to hear of the chance of buying some captive hatched anolis babies!! good luck with what ever you decide to do!! sorry for the long post but i hope this has helped. anyone please feel free to correct me at any point but i think most of what i said in the post makes sense! luke.
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it I'm not planning on selling them, they'll go to schools and the like when they get a bit bigger. Same with any normals i get from my leoperd geckos (a blazing blizard thats the pinkest blaze ive ever seen and a normal x carrot tail) im not doing this for profit, just fun. i like educating kids about reptiles they usualy get interested when i show them some of my favorites i'll do some research on anole hatclingsincubation, im sick at the moment and can only stand looking at my monitor for a short period of time so i cant do any REAL research for about another week...but if anyone wants to help me find some good pages i'll greatly apreciate it! (who woulda thought the steroids keeping me breathing would also make me so weak i can barely stand.) when you buy incubators like the ones they sell at lllreptile.com do you need to get heatpads or anything else like that?
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it ok good its cool that people like you are educating kids about reptiles!! that way when theyre older they are less likely to get them as fad pets, and can also pass on their knowledge! sorry about saying about the profit.. i didnt mean to cause any offence ill have a look through some hatchling/incubation research and if i find anything worth reading ill pm it to you and with the incubators on that site, you would not need heatpads or anything like that. all incubators should come with neccessary heat sources, and also a thermostat you can incubate the eggs at the perfect temperature. ie.. more survivors!! good luck Loyaluntodeath.. and ill have a look at some research and pm you anything i find that may be helpful. luke.
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it loyal.....heres a site I have used many times....the guy that runs it seems to really know his stuff, I think he only does anoles....thats why he knows so much! Good luck! I had anoles mate once and laid eggs....one almost hatched....after the egg died off....I was just really curious as to what was inside....it was actually a very tiny anole!!! But he didnt make it ! http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n172/bb.../Picture031.jpg
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it bethp, you didnt actually post the link lol cute beardie though
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it nice beardie well 4 new tarantulas just arrived for me today...i got bit 6 times by an asumbar baboon...wicked bite wounds leme tell ya! i found a way to incubate the eggs inside the cage, bury them inside a container in a part of the tank that will have vermiculite as the subrtate with an UTH set to 86F-90F and it'll take about a month for them to hatch, this is going to be fun!
RE: 55 gallon anole tank - can i get the eggs to hatch in it woops....sorry!..... http://disc.server.com/Indices/127268.html
