Blake: Marry me? I fought with the petco back home since I was 14 years old about the health issues of the reptiles there. My half sister works there and she's doing much the same thing you are. (They also threaten her job as well.) It makes me happy to know that things are finaly getting done.
Blake... you are my hero... I just hope that all the pet shops stop this injustice of : Leopard gecko babies on sand.
I know what you mean about petco! i worked there, in brazil right now thats why im not there still, but it took me FOREVER to even get them to let me put moss in the tanks...(im not the specialist because i am in school and can't work every morning)...eventually i just decided ill do what i want and if they tell me otherwise ill give them my reason for changing it. Since i started working in the rep section we have only had 2 accidents...and they were both when i wasnt there...someone was in charge of feeding and watering, but he turned away to get water, or so he says, and one of our cresteds got out...was out for a week until i found him chilling over by the fish....RAWR. (he was my favorite) We get our beardies REALLY small as well..and we get like 4+ in at a time... different sizes. But we also have two sections for them..not just 1 for large and 1 for the smallers. when i get back, if i can have my job back, i think i would like to switch out most of the substrates....what do you think about slate tile? would that only work for a few of the animals? i was thinking mostly the lizards and the fat tails. the frogs and toads can stay on soil sub. Would this be a good idea? or should i just try and go for carpet?
I don't know, I haven't tried the tile yet but I've heard of it... I think the carpet works well but it does have to be cleaned often... if you can get the carpet, go for it, it took me a LONG time to get it done... and if you think the tile would work for some of them, I would think it would be okay... would the tile not be too hard on them if that's all they had?
It depends on what animals are there. Tile would work for the beardies, cresties, definately the leos, the afts, and wouldnt hurt to have it in the skunk geckos, golden geckos, tokays, or even the anole cages.... when I worked there i saw so many geckos gulp down mouthfuls of the substrate when they would lunge for a cricket.... so sad. At my petco when I worked there the manager let me but repti-carpet in the cages for the leos and beardies.... she only let me put it in there if I bought it and since it was a petco product anyway...
I think i might try to push the tile...it would be easier to clean than the carpet, and thats one thing i could mention....plus...you would only have to buy it once, and if mites were a problem you just soak the tiles. I would add the decorations in and moss so they would have soft places to chill if they wanted.
