From: PIJAC Canada and PIJAC Canada (British Columbia)

Subject: Possible changes to the British Columbia Wildlife Act and their potential harm to the present and future ownership of exotic pets.

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada (PIJAC Canada) has recently learned that the government of British Columbia is looking into making some changes to the province’s Wildlife Act.

How does this affect you and why should you get involved?

One of the options presented to the BC government suggests modifications to the list of animals that could be kept as pets in this province.
Some of the changes could impose severe and unnecessary restrictions on owners of less traditional but highly recognized pets. We are talking about pet birds, pet reptiles, pet invertebrates, small mammals and ornamental fish. Without these pets, there would little need for their related pet products!
Some proposed changes to the BC Wildlife Act could be presented as fast as the upcoming spring session of the legislature.

    What is PIJAC Canada doing?

PIJAC Canada has already contacted officials at the British Columbia Ministry of the Environment, to express its strong concern over the unsettling proposed changes we perceive are being considered by the provincial government.
PIJAC Canada has provided government officials with a copy of Our Exotic Animal Policy, offering a sensible approach to the responsible ownership of exotic animals as pets.
PIJAC Canada is preparing a letter to Minister Penner to express our concerns and request an opportunity to have a proper consultation process with BC wildlife officials on this very important issue. We intend to impress on Minister Penner, the severe impact such a position could have on the British Columbia pet industry and a considerable number of British Columbia pet owners.

    What can you do?

If you operate a business in the pet industry, make sure your customers are aware of this situation and how some of the proposed changes could affect them. Please consider posting this PIJAC Canada ALERT in your store and circulating it to your customers.

Join us in making as many of your friends, colleagues, fellow hobbyists and owners of exotic pets, aware of these possible changes.

Write a letter to Minister Penner, voicing your strong concerns over these possible changes and requesting that his office take the time to conduct a consultation with the appropriate stakeholders before any action is taken. A copy of a sample letter is attached to this Alert for your consideration. Make sure you copy this letter to your government representative.

Don’t rely on somebody else to act for you. Make sure you take action and let all your friends and contacts know about what might happen to their ability to enjoy their exotic pets.

If you own an exotic pet, you might want to look at what animal welfare groups you support. Make sure you are aware of their position on exotic pet ownership.

If you haven’t already done so, please take the time to join PIJAC Canada, the voice of the Canadian pet industry. For more information please visit our website: www.pijaccanada.com or contact us via email at information@pijaccanada.com

Time is of the essence. PIJAC Canada is working closely with other concerned parties to help ensure that the voices of all BC residents that stand to be affected by such changes are heard.

We have attached a PDF copy of this email (including sample letter) and encourage you to distribute this information to anyone who may be affected by these potential changes to the B.C. Wildlife act, whether they be a business or exotic pet owner.

Actually... the is a BS Crusade... the Changes were to owning extremely impractical pets. Highly Poisonous pets, Big Cats, some Primates.

CATAL is trying to dupe people into signing their petition. And Thus there is a HUGE amount of false information being slung around about the subject.

The most hilarious thing about it, is that alot of the sources they have posted on their site actually contradict their claims.

http://www.spca.bc.ca/WildlifeAct/ has the REAL info on what is going on. Saying as the BCSPCA are the ones that are pushing the changes.

Hey eadigteon did you actually read this from the spca try page 3 where the BCSPCA wants to narrow the animals that you can keep down to the 23 listed. or maybe page 5 and 6 where they list in detail that the BCSPCA wants no one to be allowed to own any reptile more or less . and ontop of that you will not be able to breed, buy, sell , ship, transport or even show your animals. SO IS THIS A BS CRUSADE like you say NOT likely just because you work at or love the as**oles that run the BCSPCA does not make it so. The Vancouver Humane Society is also with the BCSPCA on this.

Well the new law is out as usual no real facts backing their findings so now ALL BOAS AND PYTHONS that might grow to three meters are now not allowed to be bred in BC. If some people actually got around to fighting this maybe it would not be so bad unlike in the USA where they did fight their law and won . Goes to show how lazy and selfish some of the breeders of reptiles really are.
