it depends what one you want. I'd not call them easy, but they can be considered relatively easy compared to some reptiles, but there is still a lot to consider. Most are herbivorous, so you just need the right types of salads like dandelions and endive. You'll need to research further the right type once you have chosen which type you want. you just need to make sure that they have plenty of calcium and UVB. with the enclosure you'll need a tort table and/ or a good secure outdoor enclosure. Make sure you know what you getting into some torts will get huge like sulcatas which can get over 2 1/2 feet. Horsfieldii(russian) and hermans are popular starters.
Do you have an iguana(s)? I'd compare the difficulty, somewhat, to that. Same sort of meals - just watch the protein more carefully, provide more fiber, less/no fruit. For general information, since you didn't mention a particular species, this is a good place to start - http://www.tortoisetrust.org/
i have a 3 foot green iggy, a 2 foot cali king snake, and a baby beardie what does a russian cost? do you know if petco has that bed-a-beast stuff?
I have a sulcata and yes, you do have to be prepared for them to out live you and grow you out of your house. Petco does have Bed-a-beast.
Russians cost about £100 here, but stuff always seems to cost a lot less over there. Make sure you get a CB one though. this ia a good place to start wih russians http://www.russiantortoise.org/care_sheet.htm
Re: RE: difficulty of keeping tortoises? You don't want to use straight bed-a-beast, that would hold too much humidity. Most people either mix that with sand or use a top soil + sand mixture.
RE: Re: RE: difficulty of keeping tortoises? alright thanks for all the help everyone. happy holidays to u and yours.
