Ok so... update time. http://www.reptileboards.com/threads/help-sexing-anoles-please.64310/ Well since I had to remove my anoles to fix their enclosure, well "update" it. I added some pothos to the enclosure. Well, while I had the "girls" out I wanted to double check on the sexes. And boy did I get a surprise. My larger "female" turns out to be a male, upon magnification. The smaller female is indeed a female. So now begs the question: Can they mate without me doing the temp lowering thing? (sorry, it's 3:15 AM where I am and I'm tired XD) Like, you're supposed to gradually lower the temps and then gradually raise them to ready them for mating. Is this necessary? Because if they'll still mate without lowering temps, then I will have to remove one of them and probably return him or her, whichever i return. I have no intentions of mating them, so if they will still mate... we have a problem. Thanks,
I know for sure that they can mate without the cooling off period, as I've seen it happen with the anoles at work. It's probably less likely that it will happen than if you do have the cooling off period, but it can happen nonetheless. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! D=
Well I mean I'm sure they can mate without the cooling off period but will it produce viable eggs? Im sure it will as I see no reason why it wouldn't... But im exhausted, it's this shorties bed time at 720 PM XD. I'll prob be on later though. Thanks for the responses!
thanks for the help RAWR what to do... what to do... ugh i don't want to have to get rid of one or the other, but if my mom finds out i will surely have to. Maybe even both... but then if she lays eggs... I can't incubate them and my viv isn't suited to incubate them. I will have to add a small plastic laying box so she doesn't try to hold the eggs... how will i know she's doing this? Is there any way to tell that they've mated or she's gravid?
Her abdomen may become slightly swollen if she is gravid, but you probably won't notice. I consider myself very good at noticing little things like that, and I have never picked up on a gravid anole before. They typically only lay one egg at a time, so I guess there's not much to notice anyways. As long as you have a layer of substrate on the bottom, you don't need a separate laying box. The whole bottom of the cage would be her laying box. I've even heard of people hatching eggs in the enclosure itself. Of course, that still leaves you with the problem of finding a place for the baby if it actually does hatch. Obviously you couldn't keep it with the adults. Well, I hope you are able to find a good solution. I know you have probably become attached so I'm sure returning the male would be difficult, but it may be the only option if you don't want to either dispose of the eggs (D=) or deal with breeding anoles. Good luck!
Yeah that's my problem is i don't want to have to destroy the eggs but I have become attached to my babies. Well I went to my LPS and they guy said that hatching anoles is hard so the eggs probably won't survive anyways but I told him i may have to bring one back and it will probably be the male one so I can try and get another female though I don't want to. But i'm going to have to return one or the other... but even so, if they've already mated, it's too late anyways. *sigh* decisions decisions... oh well, I'm happy XD
