If, by law it is legal to record with/witout audio, maybe we could all pitch in blowing the whistle and create a website that will broadcast Petco and other petstore's ignorance and greed. What do you think? We can have reputable Herpetologist to back us up. ** I had better luck at Petco years ago when I wrote to the top management and few days later I received an e-mail stating that he site manager has been informed. I checked, and they did change the bedding. We could each call the city police department and animal control to inquire of the legality of recording and broadcasting it.
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore If you can get this going then the petstore in my town called "Pete and Dots" I think should not be allowed the keep reptiles. In the beardies cage their is a heat cave, calcium sand, no water bowel, no thermometers, it get 1-2 dozen a day, and the cage is cleaned (not exaggerating) once a moth! Also I dont know if they are using UVB all there is, is one small bulb and I think the temps are in the 70 or 80's... I have told her kindly that some of the things that she is doing are wrond and even offered to help get them set up right but she refuses to listen. I dont know much about leo's but her is there set up which I think is horible too. Are you ready?? Calcium sand... Thats it! No water bowle, no thermometers, no hides or caves, and the lights and heating are the same as the beardies. I dont know if the size between the eye thing is the same with leo's but the crixs in there are the same size as there heads (there entire head). They have more but those are the two most terrible cases. I would love to help put them out of bussiness so If you get this going. It's "Pete and Dots" in Oelwein Iowa (U.S.) amanda
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore According to the bill of rights... Whether this would fall under freedom of speech/press, I don't know, but I would assume it's legal. One issue you may have though, if you include any company logos in the video (the big sign out the front of the pet store, or signs hanging in various places inside, even things printed on peoples' T-Shirts), they could probably sue for trademark infringement. I know in some states it's illegal to video or record a person's image or voice without their prior knowledge & permission, but if you're walking around the place with a video camera, you'd be kind of hard to miss. And even if you need to ask for permission, you wouldn't have to tell them what the video was ultimately for (but you can't outright lie, otherwise they could probably get you under deception/false pretenses).
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore On animal planet they just go into shops looking for monkeys, i saw them shut 1 place down, they just pass themselves off as tourists.
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore Take photos or videos of the enclosures, and then notify your local animal control/ASPCA. If you have a valid complaint, with evidence, they should respond and check it out, possibly resulting in warnings, fines or shutdowns.
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore i am up for pokkies idea cus alot of pet shops are not taking the best care for the animals.... my mom got one plase shut down b/c the baby ferrets had no food and water for days, the fish water was nastey, the reptiles there did not even have the essental need and my mom walked right in and started to snap pics and the lady tried to stop her lol it was so funny and then she call the police and they did nothing to my mom and she told the officers the problem and animal control was there in 20 min to close down the shop and removed all the animals and the last i heard that lady went to jail for animal curilty
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore What a way to take action..... I know personally at the shop I work for, every new reptile that we have gets a vet visit and quarenteened before we allow them to be purchased. Then we have a monthly vet visit for all of the animals. The vet we use is a reptile and exotic pet specialist. If anything is wrong, we quaranteen and treat per vet's instructions. Also, the owner hires people that has working knowlegde of animal husbandry so that all of the critters are cared for properly. Sure this costs her more overhead, but she has the animals best interest at heart. But we are a small mom and pop place and the owner understands the value of keeping healthy animals. I say take action again the big corporate pet stores that mislabel the reptiles to get a bigger price, have poor living condiditons and don't have regular vet exams. I was in a Petsmart the other day just looking around... (I don't purchase anything from them!!!) There was an African Grey that was at the bottom of his enclosure and all puffed up.... He did not look well. When I asked the person in the area, she said oh, he's just sleeping! So I brought it up to management, and they said they were taking care of him. I felt sooo bad... I called a local bird rescue and they are handling the situation. Sorry so long, I went on a tangent.
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore As far as recording events, people stores, Etc. It is differant in every state. Some states you can record voice but no video, some it's video and no voice. Some you need permision, some you do not. Always check you local laws. This is mostly related to privacy laws, Voyerism, Etc. AXE, the Bill of Rights also protects us from search and seizure. Filming or recording audio on could be considered a search of said person. That is why most law enforcement agencies need to have a court order to do video survailance or phone taps. again please check you state's laws, alot of them have changes since camera phones came out.
RE: LEGALITY to RECORD Petstore Other than the legal problems... I'm all for it. If some one sets up the site, I'll gladly submit some videos or pictures.
I like the pet store in our town, they take good care of their animals, a vet comes in once a week. The only thing I don't like is that they sell thier animals to anyone no matter who they are. If I owned a pet shop I would make sure that each and every animal was going to a good home, especially the reptiles, and amphibians. That and their puppies probably come from puppy mills.
They dont really care as long as they get thier money. Thats how they stay in buiseness. They tell you things you dont need so you'll buy it and they get some money.
I really must comment on a petsmart by my house. I was suprised that they actually care for thier reptiles. They have appropriate sized food and are kept on carpet, and give you care sheets for every herp they have. I was suprised by them. The petco however is a joke it really is they tell you stuff you dont need and have at least 20 dead crix in the leos cage. at least 10 baby leos with a single reptile cave thing that you can see through that sticks to the window, and no calcium. I dont even thnk they sell it there. Pitiful.
My pet store takes very good care of the herps. They have appropriately sized cages, branches and tall cages for arboreal animals, hides, and proper heating and lighting.
UltimateFX The petsmart about an hour and a half a way from me takes wonderful care of their reptile too. They have reptile-carpet and the correct food sizes/amount. amanda
