I suppose it isn't so much what she is doing as it is what she isn't doing. She and her co-dwellers (3 other whites' and tiger, no lectures please!) were recently moved to a gorgeous 40 gl terrarium. The only real changes are the amount of land space, and the beach platform. Instead of a textured lid from a storage box its plexi glass. But she doesn't seem happy. The others have all moved in with out any problems. But she seems, just unhappy. Instead of hanging out on the beach with the salamander she crams herself into a corner behind the filter. Yesterday I even saw in the filter net (submerged filter inside of a breeders net). Also yesterday she scared the bejeezus out of me when she leapt from the filter to a plant and was scrambling around on top of the plant (fairly stiff leaved plant) after she climbed off of that she settled on a log and seemed to be scratching at it with one hind leg. I've never seen her do any of this before. The plant is the exact same plant from the old terrarium. Last night before lights out, she was sitting on the beach with the water up to her chin (not her usual resting position on the beach) and her eyes said "I'm asleep" but they looked different somehow. So I reached in and gave her a poke, nothing, I dumped in some crickets, nothing. I picked her up and turned upside down to have a look at her belly, and she moved strongly to right herself. But when I put her back in the tank, she settled to the ground with the same look on her face. (don't laugh at me!! LOL) When I woke up sometime in the night for a drink of water, I checked on her. The whole crew was out. I couldn't tell the difference between her and the big male (no glasses or contacts in) but both frogs were in the 'alert' position in different places of the tank, than when I'd left them. I've had her for 4 or 5 years now. Her tympanic ridges say she is eating right (not reduced or over sized) she doesn't have red leg, nice clear white skin. I'd take her to a vet but an amphib specialist is hard to find in AZ. All the vets who claim to be amphib specialists just want to shoot them up with baytril to be on the safe side. (or so they say). Anyone have any tips or hints as to what else I should be looking at/for? Sharon
Well, first of all, I'll let you in on a secret....we have our White's in with a Tiger Sal too. Their cage is huge for the two of them but they've been together for a long time and we see no need to separate them now. We would not however, ever put two different species like that in a small viv again. Anyways, sounds like she's just still adjusting to the new cage. She may change her behavior completely because of the cage and may decide to do things differently than she did before. Just give her time and try to check to see if she's eating, watch her weight, and just keep an eye on her. i bet she'll right herself soon enough.
1ht - lol - well i havent seen her eating but her weight seems good. i'm wondering too if she might have gorged herself on all the exposed earthworms? granted they didnt stay exposed long.... ....hahahahahaha!!! two at least semi experienced herp keepers breaking the cardinal - no mixed species - rule!!! talk about your rebels!!! sharon
LOL! Hey, sometimes ya just feel like being baaaaad! Their feeding is hard to monitor I know, as long as she's not losing weight. Keep us updated on how she's doing!
Well, last night again, she scared the crap out of me! I looked in on her, and she was brown brown brown, with THREE bright spots of green. I mean SPOTS. Not odd blotches, perfectly round spots. SO WEIRD! She still doesn't look so happy, but she is alive. I'm going to warm up her enclosure. I'm not sure my temp gauge is reading properly any more. Sharon
