I had to go to petco cause there the only place that sells mealworms in 500 count cause last time I ordered them online they were mostly dead. Any ways I decided to go look at the leos cause I always do. Absolutly pathetic. They have them in one of those 5 gallon or less things on sand with one of those half hides that go thourgh the glass. I counted 15 babys all crammed into that hide but there were prolly more because they were so crowded. And to top that off they were all babies. Most of them looked like they were about to die. It really is pathetic that they can continue to sell snimals.

Yeah, again, big business animal stores that dont specialize in one department always neglect their reptiles some how. This is an ongoing problem and will continue to be.

:( That's horrible. Fortunately the Petco and Petsmarts here take great care of their animals, and are impressively knowledgeable about reptile care.
There's alot of pet stores here that are horrible though.
Mall pet stores seem to be the worst.

I used to work at a Petco for a while. It's actually how I got into reptiles in the first place. There were about twenty to thirty baby corn snakes crammed into a five gallon tank, and I marveled at how tiny they were, and decided I should learn more about them. After doing about two minutes worth of research, I discovered that they were being HORRIBLY mistreated - They were less than a few months old and were lucky to be offered food once a month.

The reptile specialist told me "We dont feed them as much as their owners will because we don't want them to outgrow the tank."

I was appalled. Even after I pulled more than three dead baby corns out of the tank at ONE TIME, the manager refused to do anything about it, because the reptile specialist had worked with reptiles for *gasp* at least TWO YEARS.

That was only the beginning. There were cases of her feeding the red-tail boas in their tanks, partially thawed and way too big prey. One of the boas died with a partially-regurgitated mouse stuck in its mouth.

She ordered about five savannah monitors and crammed them all into a ten gallon tank, telling people that if they underfed them, they would stay small.

I called the Petco animal-hotline, the ASPCA, and the humane society, and nobody did anything. I absolutely refuse to go into petcos anymore.

Where have you been ordering your mealies from online? I've ordered three times now from Ghann's ( http://www.ghann.com/ ) and I haven't found ANY dead worms in any of the three shipments. And I ordered 1000 each time.

That is SO sad that any one let alone a "reptile specialist" would do that to a reptile! I am 14 but as soon as I am old enough to I will get a job at some pet shop just so I can help out the herps.

I also plan to get a job at a Pet store. It is sad the conditions they are kept in, but I figure that if I work their long enough I can gain respect and start doing something about the feeding and bedding. I found out that they keep the babies on sand, bark, or something that could get impacted because it looks good. It's all about how it looks, so they can sell more! The breeder I bought my Dragon from always tells the pet stores what they are doing wrong. Luckily, she has a friend that works there! If they have a baby with something wrong with it, she takes it in and tries her hardest to cure it. Now that's dedication!

I always buy my feeders online. I've had a few issues with crickets being delivered (I live in cold Buffalo, and the delivery drivers like to leave boxes in 2 ft of snow), but I have yet to have any issues with mealworms or waxworms. I order pretty frequently too. NYWorms is pretty good. TheAmericanCricketRanch is also another favorite of mine.

If us un-retarded people get jobs at these places we can improve them. Petco is only alowed one reptile specialist per store, and the specialist at pestmart take care of all the fish and reptiles and these jobs are given to any teens.

Yes, but I know with Petco, they have policies where they have to use calci-sand in most cases. That's because customers will buy what they see the store using in their enclosures, and that's the store's way of pushing the product. Even if you are employee, you can't really change store policies too easily with a large chain like that.

The PetCos In Southern Cali all 7 that i have been to are the same way.
There was a chinease dwarf hamster at my local one, i went in to purchase a fish diet that only they carry for a client whom i was pet sitting for, and my friend started shreeking at me, they had it in with 3 "teddy bear" hamsters as they are commonly called, and they were practically eating him. The manager wouldnt take him out said it was against store policy they could only thake them out if they were "sick or dead" so i bought him.

He lives happly with my FERRETT!!!

Yea most people cant believe that one, she cleans him and carries him around, he shares nuts with her

How did you even manage to discover that your ferret wouldn't eat the hamster?
    Rodents = prey for ferrets....
I remember when I had 2 ferrets, they tried to attack my cat o_O
