I recently build a tank stand to hold my 2 20 gallons and 2 10 gallons as well as the 2 feeder tanks, cricket keeper, and mealworms. I built it out of select stud 2 by 4 and have intentions of finishing it this weekend by adding hard wired lighting and plywood shelves. My concern is the heat from the lighting leeching chemicals out of the shelves above each tank (where the light is screwed into) into the tank below it. What should I use to seal the underside of each shelf to prevent this?

Unless you used treated wood you really wouldn't have any detrimental out-gassing when it gets hot... You should be ok not treating the wood.
