Yes the water bowl thing is normal, it probably means hes going to shed soon. Also, i doubt your snake has ticks you would usually see them.

What is the humidity levels in it's setup? And, they do sell tick/mite sprays at pet stores.

Also, might be a good idea to do some searching for reptile vets in your area so you have one ready if need be.

Ok, well i am davids friend, i told him about this website.

He doesnt have internet access at home, so he is usually at his friends house, but i dont know when he will be back.

I will try to get this information to him.

Ok, about the ticks, he HAS seen them.

I helped him look for a herp vet around here.

The closest one on that herpvetconnection was 14miles away :D

is there a way to see if there is one closer than that? any other sites?

I'll call him in a bit, to see if he has any more questions.

If the snake is soaking for extended periods it is probably for one or more of the following reasons:
    Temps too high
    Humidity too low
    Mites

All three are easy to take care of but will require a bit of working from your friend.
For the temps and humidity get a digital hygrometer and thermometer and find out what they are.
For the mites check out this link: http://www.reptilerooms.com/index.php?name...mites+permanone
