Ok so today my cousin went to purchase a cali king snake, and I saw a tokay gecko, ive read up on them before and i had been looking into getting one and i bought this one even though i knew it was WC like most. And yes i know they are aggressive but i dont mind really ---- anyways i figured i had and extra 30 gal downstairs that i could house it in and use some of my crested geckos extra plants and etc. So I buy it then i remember... I let my sister use the tank for her hedgehog. So right now my tokay is sitting in a 7 gallon turned on its side lots of plants and climbing branches but still nowhere near big enough the recomended size. Hes not full grown though id say hes 8 inches.. his heat is good his tank is humid but my question is how long can he stay alive in such a small tank :S? my beardies in his 50 gal, my creasties in her giant exoterra vertical enclosure and my female leopard gecko is in a 20 gallon and my other gecko that was given to me by someone who didnt want it is in a 10 gallon. Now i was thinking put the tokay in the exoterra and but the geckos together in the 10 gal or maybe even one in the five gal but i really dont want my albino leopard gecko female) to have any possible risk of injury by putting her with the new male leopard somebody help me out here!
Right, you can't keep a tokay in a 7 GAL for long. He'll get really stressed pretty soon, considering how active they are. I suggest you just go straight down to the pet store and buy a new tank for the Tokay. It's a whole lot easier that way. Keeping all your other herps seperate it best. If you can't, for any reason get another tank, i think you need to give the tokay back to the pet store, or even put him up for adoption.
well im heading to the pet store tomorrow to buy another tank, my moms paying for it. I kinda feel bad though making her pay it, my sister should be paying for it since shes using the tank i planned on using... either way, the tokay should be getting his new home tomorrow and ill get some pics in Edit: Oh just to clarify i wasnt thinking of mixing any species just trying the two leopards together.
That's great news. I'm sure you can find a way to pay your mom back! Btw, make sure you DO get us some pics
Another quick question, Have your tokays ever ate anything dead? I attempted to feed it a frozen cricket and grasshopper the first day I got him. Much to my suprise he didnt bite. I put it right on the tip of his nose and he didnt bite the whole time. I found it a bit weird cause when the pet shop reptile specialist put it in the box its mouth was gaping the hold time trying to get hold of his hand. I thought maybe It was only aggressive because It was in the petshop or something. I guess i thought wrong cause the next morning i attempted to feed him the grass hopper and within a second the grasshopper was half way accross my room as he had qickly grabed it and shook his head to send it away. But I thought itd be possibly to feed them frozen crickets or grasshoppers seeings how when they bite they dont let go, maybe he just didnt like the taste? Anyone ever tried? Another question ive got is about a certain picture on google: http://hoglezoo.org/animal.photos/tokay.gecko1.jpg Is that gecko overweight? In every picture other in this one I see tokays with thin tails put this one is just huge? Hows it possible to get it that thick?
I think your tokay might have "froze" out of fright....they do that and that's why you didn't get bit maybe. Mine doesn't try to kill me unless I pick him up. Mine have never eaten anything dead before. He loves to hunt. do you feed all your geckos dead food ?
Nope feed all live(one leo takes dead and live though), my beardie eats veggies and big dead grasshoppers as he can eat millions of anything else.
Healthy adults will can get thick tails. The one you showed a pic of is probably pretty old and looks a little overweight though. heres a old pic of mine and you can see the females don't have thin tails like youre accustomed to seeing.
The gaping mouth is part of their warning body language(along with those deep breaths) It means get the hell away from me with that hand or ill have it off, just a friendly warning. and as for fat geckos is mine too huge? how often and how much do every ones eat?
brendywendy yours looks alot bigger than the ones I usualy see on google and even on most forums! Now my tokays pretty much settled in and hes ate and poo'd today for the first time (yay? lol). My next question though is how do i get him chubbier? dakman and brendywendy what do you guys feed those beasts? lol, but seriously since i guessthere thinner at pet shops and WC, should i maybe get him a pinkie or two to put weight back on? and if so will he take it dead? Do they take silkies?
I use a staple diet of gut loaded crickets. Some Tokays will take mealworms and some have no interest in them. Roaches, silkies or any feeders thay will eat are fine, nothing wrong with variety. I find crix to be their favorite and hear roaches do well also but I have never tried them. Pinkies are more or less a treat and will help fatten them up but I wouldn't suggest more than one a month, maybe every other week for a little while if you feel its way underweight and be sure they are small pinkies unless you have a large Tokay. Over the years I have never been able to get mine to eat anything that didn't move ALOT. Thats why mealies don't do so well most the time. I've heard of people feeding frozen pinkies and crix in the can(dead) so I guess anything is possible but thats not really natural for them, they are hunters.
Mine eat the heck out of gutloaded crix, gutloaded mealworms, and love to lap up baby fruit food. I have pinkies for my other reptiles, but I have never had a need for feeding pinkies to my tokays for they never had a pencil thin body.
Well it appears mine takes nothing from my hand, So it seems like crickets it is, How many do you guys feed per week? Does anybody have a really well put together tokay care sheet? I mean ive seen a few but its really just general stuff and im looking for something more indept to make my geckos life as best i can.
i feed mine locusts, but think you cannot get them in the states if thats where u are....oh no, its canadia dunno if u can get them there, but moe loves them he eats 3 midsized ones every 2-3 days
When they are big I really dont count how many I give. I quess I add about 6-8 crickets and some mealworms in a bowl. I pay more attention to how many I give to younger ones though. Tokays will eat when they are hungry and stop when they are full. If they look like they are getting fat, then I back off how many times a week I feed them and how much. Each is own..... Not much out there on tokays. I got 2 books and really all it has in it is just the general stuff like any other care book has. Do a google search and you find about the basic care instructions thats in the books. Nothing going in depth with this species that I have found. Just give your tokay the proper husbandry, provide adequate housing and furnishings, spot clean the cage daily, provide hide spots, provide proper temps, provide a warm and cool end, provide a photo period, mist the cage daily, feed gutloaded dusted crickets ect...., and honestly your tokay will thrive and be healthy.
