    i would like to know if you need a license once they get big enough or if you know a place to find out?

    No - so long as they are not on the restricted list (for example retics, burmese etc)

    The relevant sections are primarily Schedule 5 - Controlled Animals and a section above that "Non Game animals"

    I've listed the reptiles and Amphibians that appear on the list for the sake of convenience. Follow the link for the full act. Basically anything on this list is illegal to possess in Alberta without a special permit.
