Each species of chameleon has a different range of colors they can change to and a different range of patterns.

Using the veiled as an example...the adult male can be yellow/torquoise/white or green/brown/white or other combinations when just hanging around in its cage.

When a male sees another male it will brighten its colors, flatten its body vertically, hold one hand up near its neck, coil and uncoil its tail, gape, hiss, inflate its gular pouch (chin) and get ready to fight off the other male.

When a male sees a female he will also brighten his colors...but he will not his or gape, etc. and he will likely move his head in a jerky motion and pursue the female.

When the female sees a male and she is gravid (pregnant)/non-receptive she will darken the background color to almost black and have bright torquoise spots and mustard splotches on her body. She will hiss, gape, rock back and forth and lunge at the male if he is close enough.

If she can see the male and she is receptive/looking to mate she will not turn dark in the background and hold her body close to the branch and not inflate her body and likely move slowly away from the male.

They can also adopt other patterns sometimes when they are apprehensive or keeping an eye out for predators or enemies.

    Angry/agressive...

This chameleon is showing you that he is a bit apprehensive...

Chameleons will also lighten their colors when they are sleeping and when they are hot...and darken their colors when they are cold.

Sorry but I don't have time to look for more pictures right now.
