Our rainbow boa lives in a glass vivarium, it has a heat mat underneath one end of the tank, and a heat bulb at the top, over the warm end, which we switch on and off to create day/night effect. But I don't think the tank is warm enough. especially at night. we are getting temps of 80 - 85 in the day, but on very cold winter nights it drops to below 70. I'm not convinced we were sold the correct tank/equipment, despite going to a specialist reptile centre, following their advice and spending quite a lot of money. Should we switch to a malamine vivarium? Or can anyone suggest an alternative heat source, for an all-glass tank? We are desperate to get conditions right for him.
The daytime temps sound good. What is the humidity level in the tank? Hiow and where are you getting your temp measurements?
I agree with stormy (as usual) and I also believe that everything is prolly fine. It's real hard to check the belly temps unless your temperature probe is right over the top of the heat mat or you have an infarred temperature gun.
we have a single thermometer in the middle of the tank. Humidity is around 70 - 80 %. Our house gets quite cold at night, which is what's worrying me. One morning the snake had moved to his coolest hide and stayed there, the temp was reading just above 60, we picked up the snake to move him and he felt quite cold.
i think he should be ok...do you leave to heat mat on or off at night??? my temps are about the same and my guy has been in pretty good shape for over a year...as long as you keep the day temps up and the humidity in the 70-80% range he should live a good long time! GOOD LUCK~ ~*Paula Branae`*~
I have the same problem with mine... my room gets quite cold at night and my RTB always goes under the rock which I guess its kindof warm in there. But if I pick him up and he is warm to the touch is that good?
it may be an idea to install a ceramic heater and thermostat, they can be quite costly but i use them in all of my vivs and have found them to be essentual in achiving the right temperature for the reptile both day and night as long as you get a thermostat that can be turned down enough for the night time temperature. also i find using say a uv and a ceremamic heater over a baskinglamp also helps increase the humidity as the bulbs tend to dry the humidy out of the air. but unless you dont mind the cold colour of light from a uv bulb, i always have low power (having a huge viv-6ftx3x4 i use a 60w) spot bulb purely for the warmer looking light along with a c heater and uv ________________________ j0nn7_5 6.ft Red Tail Boa Adult Bearded Dragon 3ft Brazillian Raindow Boa
