I agree that you should avoid Calci-Sand at all costs. It can bind and cause impactions if ingested and besides...it costs a fortune compared to regular playground sand and the idea that the lizards would eat the sand for calcium supplementation is ridiculous. Don't bother with it, it's not worth it and it is possible that it could harm your BD.
That's funny, because I've had 3 different vets who specialize in reptiles say that calci-sand is horrible.
I know that the most experienced Vet with bearded dragons (he has done research on them for at least 15 years and was the one that developed the fecal protocal for testing them for adenovirus) is very ANTI calci-sands. My vet is also and she is the exotic specialist for a large clinic, prior to that she worked at the clinic that was the wildlife and exotic dropoff point for for animal control and the sheriffs office. We personal have had several dragons bought to us that people got from pet stores who told them to use calci-sand and they were impacted, we were able to save all of them but one and he was just so pack up with calci-sand that even our vet and several enemas could not get it all out. So hopefully other people who read mezavotz comments will realize either him/her or his vet does not have much experience or knowledge on the subject compared to professionals of many years who know better. If he/she wants to put his own dragon at risk, that is his/her choice. You can always tell the new breeders who bought Dragons from pet stores, they are the ONLY ones that recommend calci-Sand...... and then usually only for a short time til they get clued in..... thankfullly most people learn quick to avoid their dragons and their advice!! They usually do not last long either. All the impaction issues aside.... how can someone stand that smell in hot sand, even our small sandboxes our guys have I take out at times so thier enclosures smell nice a lot of the time, and I change out the sand often!!
Ya, i would never use calci sand, a huge waste of money. Lol, i think i know what you mean about the smell the sand makes, but its really hard to explain.
