I was just wondering how would I know if my snake would have mouth rot? there is like little black stuff on his chin but I cannot figure out if that his just his genetics and color. He is a normal ball python btw. I couldnt really open his mouth either, I was scared if I would hurt him. Also today i picked off a peice of aspen that was stuck around his mouth.
Small red spots along the jaw are signs that an infection is starting. Look for swelling of the jaw or scales that are being pushed outward and a cheesy looking discharge along the gumline. Snakes with mouth rot generally don't eat. Can you remove the black "stuff" around his mouth? The discharge is usually white. If you don't see any of these signs, then don't wory.
You might want to removed the substrate from the tank and place him in paper towels. that would help keep the problem area clean.
would that help him not get mouth rot? or just help the substrate not get in his mouth so he wont get it then. or if he already has it you mean?
If he has mouth rot the general procedure is to remove substrate, raise the heat and get him to a herp vet.
Gotcha, I dont think he has MR I read your last couple posts good and did not see those signs so hopefully he doesn't I will still be contacting a herp vet though. Thanks for all your advice everyone Chase.
A picture may help. You're doing the right thing by getting this little guy to a vet. Find a vet near you: www.herpvetconnection.com
thanks a ton luke. that site really really helped, I found one and have a appointment sched for this upcomming thursday and 4:30. I really apreciate everyone that took there time to help out! Chase.
That's good. Bring a fecal sample to the vet so he can have it checked for parasites. While you are there, you might as well have him get a complete check up. All my snakes go once a year. Let us know how you make out.
