Wondering if spinach and kale is good for most of the diet of a russian tortoise. I have a sweet pea plant in his cage and aloe plant in his cage which he munches on when he finishes his greens and I'm not around to refill it. I was just wondering if that was good or could I feed him fruits if I wanted to?
I would stick with greens such as mustard, turnip, dandelion, and collard. You can also offer yellow squash, carrot, apple, banana, pear, and sliced grapes. I wouldn't let him eat on potted plants because you never know what types of pesticides greenhouses have used and some plants themselves may be poisonous. He needs to be fed about 3 times a week. What size is he?
Spinach and kale are high in oxalates and goitrogens, which block the absorption of vitamin D3, so should only be fed on RARE occasions as a treat mixed with other greens like the ones Biochic mentioned.
