I'm from South Carolina near the Charleston area and i was wondering what the best tortoise would be for me to get. I have a big backyard to put one in, but not enough room in the house, other than a tub, to put one in when it gets cold. I was looking at the Red-Footed tortoise, but i was wondering if there were any others that would fair better near the coast of SC.
A red foot tortoise may not be your best choice with your climate. Russian tortoises, a tortoise that doesn't actually occur in Russia may be a better choice if you can find a healthy, established animal. They can handle VERY hot summers and even snowy winters if given a proper area to brumate. They are also quite small, so they are very easy to house and care for inside your house if you wish to keep them inside for the winter.
