I've really been wondering this for some time now: what is an "ackie"?

I'm pretty sure it's a lizard, but what kind of lizard is it, and what is the specific name of this reptile?

I'm assuming that they are meduim to large sized reptiles, requiring a more "arid" atmosphered enclosure.

An ackie is a small species of montior lizard. Its scientific name is Varanus acanthurus often shortened to "ackie". It is also known as a ridgetailed monitor due to its spikey tail.

It is small for a monitor, growing to between 2-3'. Usually staying closer to 24-28" including the tail. The two most common varieties are reds(Varanus acanthurus acanthurus) and yellows (Varanus acanthurus brachyurus) . Reds tend to get a bit larger.

I wouldnt say they require an arid environment. They actually need a relatively high humidty in their cage in order to thrive.
